Jodie Whittaker’s final season of Doctor Who is only days away, and while we’ve gotten a teaser trailer or two, we still don’t know very much about the six-episode season, titled Doctor Who: Flux.
In an interview with Empire, however, Whittaker gives us a little more of a tease about Flux will cover, and it sounds like it will be something we haven’t necessarily seen before.
“There have always been arcs across the series in Doctor Who, particularly where the Doctor is concerned,” Whittaker told Empire. “But this time it’s bigger, more ambitious. It’s a massive arc, and what has been interesting is realizing that at the end of part three, you’re only halfway there. So it’s about having that kind of stamina, and not playing all your narrative cards at once.”

Based on Whittaker’s comments, it looks like the six-part season will tell one comprehensive story—a story that will not only involve several recurring Doctor Who species like the Sontarans, Weeping Angels, Cybermen, and the Ood, but will also see the Doctor get an additional companion, Dan (John Bishop).
Dan will be joining the Doctor and her existing companion, Yaz (Mandip Gill) on this six-episode adventure. And while this will be the last season for Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall, we still have three additional specials to look forward to before we get a new to-be-announced Doctor to fill her shoes and join returning showrunner, Russell T. Davies.
While we wait on news on that front, however, we can check out the first episode of Doctor Who: Flux, titled “The Halloween Apocalypse,” when it premieres on BBC One, BBC America, and BBC iPlayer on Oct. 31, 2021.
